Head Coach
L.J. Marx begins his eighth year as a head varsity coach in 2012 (124-93, 7 years). Marx was named both American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III “Men’s Coach of the Year” and Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association “Division III Coach of the Year” in 2005 and 2007. He has guided the Red Men to three MIVA Coleman Division titles and three Midwest-III Volleyball Conference championships. In Molten Championship competition, Marx led the Red Men to second-place finishes in both 2005 and 2007 and third-place finishes in both 2010 and 2011. Carthage played host to the 2010 event at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
Marx’s players have earned AVCA All-America honors on 11 occasions. He has also coached four conference “players of the year” and 25 all-conference selections. His teams have won either divisional or conference titles in six of the last seven years and have won divisional or conference tournaments in six of the last seven seasons. Four of Marx’s six teams have finished among the AVCA’s top-three NCAA Division III teams in the final poll, six teams have finished in the top-10, and all seven have finished in the top-15.
Prior to the start of Carthage’s varsity program, Marx coached the Red Men’s club teams in 2003 and 2004, compiled a 43-18 record and won the 2004 National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association Division II championship. Marx served as an assistant women’s volleyball coach at Carthage for three years from 2004 to 2006 after three years as a part-time assistant coach from 2000 to 2002.
A native of Racine, Wis., Marx graduated from Carthage in 2003 with a bachelor’s in exercise and sport science after transferring from Wisconsin-Parkside. As a player, Marx was named All-Wisconsin Volleyball Conference in both 2002 and 2003 and selected for that league’s all-star match both years. He also played on a 2003 Wisconsin Volleyball Conference squad that competed at the USA National tournament. Marx is a certified USA Volleyball coach and has guided four USA Junior National All-Americans and three Volleyball Magazine “Fab 50” selections. He has also served as a coach at the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships and camps.
